How do I safely encounter bears while hiking in Banff?
Wear bear spray on your hip and know how to use it, hike in groups of at least four, and make noise around blind corners and dense areas. Never bring food into your tent or leave litter on the trail. Check Parks Canada’s daily trail-closure board. If you see a bear, do not run—back away slowly while facing it.
Is a park pass required, and how much does it cost?
Yes, every vehicle stopping in Banff or Jasper must have a Parks Canada pass. Daily entry is about 11 CAD per person, while the annual Discovery Pass pays off if you stay more than a week. Passes are sold online, at the Trans-Canada Highway toll gates, or at the Banff visitor centre.
How do I get to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake now?
The road to Moraine Lake is closed to private vehicles year-round, so access is only via Parks Canada shuttles, Roam transit, or licensed operators. Shuttle reservations open early and sell out fast in summer. Lake Louise is still reachable by car, but parking is paid and fills before 7 a.m.

When is the best time to visit—summer or winter?
June to September for hiking, turquoise lakes, and the Icefields Parkway with temperatures of 15 to 25°C. December to March for skiing at Sunshine Village or Lake Louise, plus the bubble-ice phenomenon at Abraham Lake. Lakes only fully thaw and reach peak colour around late June, so early June may still look frozen.
Do I need to rent a car, or can I get by without one?
Renting a car offers full freedom, especially for the Icefields Parkway. Going car-free is still doable, as Roam Transit connects Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise, and Johnston Canyon. If driving in winter, ensure your vehicle has snow tires and check road reports—ice is common.
