Should you rent a bike in Amsterdam if you’ve never tried?
Biking is the locals’ easiest way to get around, but the lanes are fast and full of rules. If you’re not confident, practice first in Vondelpark before hitting the canal ring. Always cycle in the red lanes, use hand signals, and never stop suddenly in the middle of the path. Use two locks—bike theft is common—and remember trams have priority.
Do Amsterdam museums need to be booked online?
Yes, for the popular ones. Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum use timed entry, while Anne Frank House sells all tickets online and often sells out weeks in advance. If you plan to visit three or more museums, check whether the Museumkaart or I amsterdam City Card offers better value, including transport.
Do Indonesian passport holders need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands?
Yes. Indonesian passport holders require a Schengen Type C visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Apply through the official Dutch embassy application center in Jakarta with proof of funds, insurance, tickets, and accommodation. Submit your application six to eight weeks before departure, as interview slots can fill up during peak seasons.
What’s the easiest way from Schiphol to the city center?
The NS train to Amsterdam Centraal takes 15 to 20 minutes and runs very frequently. Buy tickets at the machines or tap a contactless debit card at the gates. Inside the city, trams and the metro use the same tap-in, tap-out system. Taxis are much more expensive and no faster during rush hour.
When is the best time to see tulips?
Peak tulip season is usually mid-April to early May. Keukenhof is only open for about eight weeks in spring, and tickets must be booked with a bus time slot. The tulip fields around Lisse can be viewed for free from the bike paths, but do not enter the fields. Early April can sometimes be too early, depending on the weather.
Is halal food available, and what are the rules on cannabis?
Amsterdam has many halal Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese, and Indonesian restaurants, especially in De Pijp and Javastraat. A rijsttafel is a unique experience, though not always halal—always confirm first. Cannabis is only tolerated inside licensed coffeeshops; it’s not allowed on central city streets and cannot be taken home.
